About this video
Executing an armbar from side control begins with securing the opponent's arm by hugging it tightly, making it part of your body so that your movements control their limb. Aim to use your body against their limb, not limb against limb.
- After a throw, if the opponent has a lapel grip, you'll land in side control with their arm in front.
- Slide behind the opponent's arm and hug it close to absorb it with your mass.
- Place your right knee on the mat beside their head to control their neck, which will naturally make them turn onto their side to relieve pressure.
- Block the opponent's hip with your other leg to prevent them from rolling back.
- Maintain inward pressure with both legs, almost like a scissor motion, to control the opponent's body.
- Instead of stepping over the head to go for the armbar, which creates space, pivot on your knee at a 45-degree angle while keeping your inner thigh connected to their face.
- Ensure control is established before sitting back for the armbar. Slightly adjust your grip if necessary and finish the submission.
Remember to hug the arm tightly throughout the process, and you can even grab your own lapel for additional control. Control the opponent's face to facilitate turning them onto their side, and maintain the connection between your thigh and their face as you pivot and slide into the armbar finish.
