About this video
Executing a rolling toe hold from half guard involves creating a distraction for the opponent before attacking the legs. Begin by establishing a credible threat to the upper body, such as feigning an arm attack, to divert attention from the legs. Ensure both arms remain free to execute the toe hold.
- From half guard, with the opponent locking down on the outside, initiate a distraction by attacking the upper body without committing your arms.
- Prepare to dive and roll over the shoulder nearest to the opponent's legs, tucking your arm as if performing a forward roll.
- As you roll, reach for the opponent's toes with the hand closest to their legs, while the other hand goes underneath their leg to meet your wrist, setting up the toe hold grip.
- Use the trapped leg to pull the opponent over as you complete the roll, which positions you to finish the toe hold.
- Ensure the grip is secure by targeting your wrist with the hand under the opponent's leg, and use the rolling motion to kick the opponent over with your trapped leg.
- Once the opponent is rolled over, apply the toe hold by compressing their toes towards their own hip, using both hands to apply pressure.
This technique leverages the element of surprise and the momentum of the roll to secure a toe hold submission from the half guard position.
