About this video

The Podhvat, or leg lifting throw, is a classic Sambo technique that involves a sweeping motion to off-balance and throw the opponent. To execute this technique:

  1. Maintain a grip on the opponent's belt and prepare to perform a back step.
  2. Position yourself to catch the opponent's leg above the knee and below the hip, which is the pivot point for the throw.
  3. Execute the back step and simultaneously lift the opponent's leg, sweeping them over your own leg.
  4. As the opponent lands, maintain control of their arm to prevent escape and set up for a submission.
  5. Finish the throw with your shin or knee on the opponent's belly and the other shin pressing against their head to establish control.
  6. If the opponent attempts to circle away, use feints such as a foot sweep to initiate their movement, then catch them with the throw.
  7. After completing the throw, position yourself for an armbar submission by placing your shin on the opponent's neck and securing their arm.

This technique is effective for catching an opponent off-guard, especially when they are trying to circle away, and allows for a seamless transition to a submission hold.
