About this video
Executing an inside hooking throw (Asaichi Harai) begins with establishing an over-the-back Russian grip. The objective is to target the same leg that would be used for a foot sweep, but with a different technique.
- Encourage the opponent to step forward by using body movement rather than arm strength. This is achieved by stepping out with the left foot and pivoting, which brings the opponent's target leg forward.
- After the opponent steps, drop to the right knee and perform an inside hook on the target leg, securing it behind the ankle.
- Release the belt grip immediately after hooking the leg to avoid being pulled into the opponent's guard and to maintain a strong posture.
- Repeat the process: take a step, pivot to make the opponent step, execute the inside hook, and let go of the grip to stay upright while the opponent goes down.
Using the over-the-back grip for this throw is advantageous because it offers better control over the opponent's body and protects the arms from potential armbars, unlike other grips such as the lapel grip.
