About this video
Setting up a toe hold from the scarf position (Kesa-gatame) involves baiting the opponent into attempting a sweep. Maintain a strong Kesa-gatame with your head low, leg straight, and the opponent's head off the ground. When the opponent tries to frame against you and sweep you over with their leg, you can use this to your advantage:
- Allow the opponent to frame and push up, deliberately letting their leg miss your head to encourage them to try again.
- On their next attempt, time it so that as they push up and swing their leg, you catch their foot.
- Lean forward with your whole body to apply the toe hold, using your chest and hand for pressure.
- It's crucial to lean in as you catch the foot to prevent being swept.
- Use a sweeping arm motion over your head as you lean to secure the toe hold.
- If the opponent is not flexible, they may tap from the initial pressure. If they are flexible, grab their foot against your body to finalize the toe hold.
This technique serves as a counter to the opponent's defense against Kesa-gatame, turning their sweep attempt into a submission opportunity for you.
