About this video
Securing the Russian belt grip on the near shoulder involves a subtle approach to avoid the opponent's defenses. To achieve this grip:
- Start with the opponent having a grip on your sleeve. Attempting to reach directly for the belt will result in the opponent controlling your movement.
- Perform a slight snap down on the opponent's arm to create an opening.
- Slide your arm over the opponent's arm, which will help to pry their hand off your sleeve.
- As you slide your arm, reach for the opponent's belt over the same side shoulder.
- Keep your leg back to prevent the opponent from grabbing it.
- Once you have the belt, bury your head into the opponent, pinch your elbow in, and distribute your weight onto them to maintain control.
- Be prepared to sprawl if the opponent attempts to reach for your legs.
- With this grip, you have control over the opponent's arm and belt, which is referred to as the Russian grip, over the back to the belt on the same side as the arm that is gripped.
