About this video
Passing the spider guard involves a series of steps to prevent the opponent from establishing control and to set up a pass. Begin by pinching your knees and raising your legs to avoid De La Riva hooks or sweeps. Grip the top of the opponent's shin and keep your elbows closed for control.
- Identify the side where the opponent's leg is more bent and walk slightly to that side, in front of the leg.
- Release the grip on the shin and swing your arm under the opponent's leg while simultaneously grabbing their pants.
- Raise your knee and step on the opponent's leg with your toes, using a monkey grip to control their leg. Avoid stepping over the leg to prevent ending up in a 50/50 position.
- Jump over the opponent's leg while posturing up to escape biceps control. Push the opponent's leg down with your elbow going higher.
- As the opponent starts to turn, place your elbow over their arm and pinch it in. Execute a topspin to pass their guard.
- After passing, let go of the pants and control the opponent's collar in a seatbelt-like position to stabilize.
Throughout the technique, maintain good posture with hips low, close your elbows to prevent excessive control by the opponent, and use your foot to control their leg effectively.
