About this video
Executing a backstep to back take when the opponent has an underhook from half guard:
- Post hands on the mat for balance and pinch the elbow on the side of the underhook to slow the opponent down.
- Lean forward, retract the leg to trap the opponent's leg, and switch sides without hugging the head. Instead, look to the opponent's armpit and lock it with your elbow.
- Control the opponent's knee with your left hand and use the other hand to block their armpit.
- Ensure your elbow is high to control the opponent's arm and prevent them from framing against your back.
- Keep your knee up to defend your back and maintain grips on the opponent's leg and armpit.
- When ready to roll, ensure your foot is squeezing the opponent's leg to ensure they follow during the roll.
- Execute a front roll over your shoulder, controlling the opponent's leg on top of the knee.
- As you roll, bring the opponent's leg with you and kick out with your other leg to off-balance them.
- Transition your hand from the opponent's leg to control their arm and establish a seatbelt grip.
- Finish by taking the back and inserting the second hook to secure the position.
