About this video
Escaping the De La Riva hook and passing to side control:
- Begin by escaping the De La Riva hook to prevent getting stuck. Use your palm to push down on the opponent's leg as close to the ankle as possible.
- Push the leg down while popping your leg out to break the De La Riva hook. Walk your toes slightly outward so your knee points away from your opponent.
- Continue pushing the De La Riva hook down to prevent it from being re-established. Perform a small back step and jump over the opponent's leg.
- Slide your hand under to grab the opponent's wrist. Pull the wrist up while walking back to the center, pinching your knees together and squatting down.
- Release the wrist and hug the opponent's head. Lean forward and execute a long step to slide your hips over.
- Control the bottom leg by pushing it down and stabilize in side control.
Remember to maintain grips on the ankle throughout the pass, and adjust your hand positioning as needed for balance or to control the opponent's legs. The key is to prevent the De La Riva hook from being re-engaged and to secure side control efficiently.
