About this video

Opening and passing the closed guard with a stack pass involves a series of steps to maintain control and apply pressure:

  1. Start in the closed guard with good posture, on bent toes, and never let your head drop.
  2. Set up grips by controlling both lapels and transferring one grip to the other hand to apply pressure on the opponent.
  3. Change the angle and use the heels of your hands to push the opponent down, keeping your arm extended and elbows connected.
  4. Decide which leg to stand up with, the same side you control the pants, to prevent the opponent from going under your leg.
  5. Post the chosen leg, pinch your knee against the opponent's hip, and use your toes to stand up while maintaining pressure on their chest.
  6. Release the collar grip and push the opponent's knee down, dropping your knee to the mat while keeping the other knee up to prevent re-closure of the guard.
  7. Grab the opponent's knee with one hand and go under their leg with the other, reaching for the collar and closing your elbow.
  8. Ensure your palm is down and your knee blocks the opponent's hip to prevent them from locking a triangle.
  9. Lean forward to stack the opponent, forcing them to frame against your hips.
  10. Lift your knee slightly and slide it over the opponent's biceps, maintaining control of their knee and the mat.
  11. Pass the guard by opening your chest and sliding through, securing side control with your head down and elbow over the opponent's body.
  12. Adjust your position by hugging the opponent's head, grabbing the armpit, and applying shoulder pressure to their face.
  13. Finally, establish a solid side control with your toes on the mat and your weight distributed evenly.
