About this video
Passing the deep half guard when unable to open the knee:
- Push the opponent's head down and attempt to slide the knee to the other side. If the opponent controls well and prevents this, prepare for an alternative pass.
- Keep fighting against the opponent's leg by pushing it down and maintain balance by posting hands on the floor.
- Drop the knee to the mat as if entering a mount position and simultaneously extend the other leg.
- Open the knee and ensure the pass is directed more forward than to the side, using the hand to defend the back and secure an underhook.
- When switching sides, drop the knee, post hands on the floor, and move the other hand out to protect the back.
- If off-balanced, post hands on the floor for stability.
- Lean forward on the opponent, not to the side, to avoid common mistakes and ensure a heavy hip to prevent the opponent from inserting their knee underneath.
- Slide the leg forward first, then sideways, using the thigh rather than the knee to pass.
- If the opponent controls the foot, use hip movements to free the leg from half guard.
- Once the leg is free, hug the opponent's head and use shoulder pressure to bring the leg back and stabilize in side control.
