About this video
Executing a long step pass against a De la Riva guard:
- Begin with your hips low and establish grips: one hand on the opponent's collar, thumb inside near the collarbone, and the other hand either using a C-grip or gripping the edge of the pants on the opponent's leg.
- Pull the opponent up using the collar grip and use your elbow to press against their knee to break the De la Riva hook.
- Perform small back steps while pushing the opponent's leg down to create space for the long step.
- Jump over to the opposite side, landing in a Reverse De la Riva position, and close your elbow to prevent the opponent from using knee shield or lasso.
- Switch your collar grip to the opponent's hip, palm down, and pinch your elbow to your knee to close any space.
- Hug the opponent's head and simultaneously drop your knee to the mat as you execute the long step.
- Use the hand on the hip to block the opponent's leg, depending on whether they bring the bottom or top leg into play.
- Walk towards the opponent's head and drive forward to gain inside control, keeping your hips slightly off the mat to apply pressure with your shoulder.
- Push the opponent's leg flat to the mat, reverse the position, and stabilize to complete the pass.
