About this video

Defending against the backstep pass from X-Guard and recovering full guard:

  1. Start in a modified X-Guard with your foot on the opponent's hip and your knee behind their leg. Secure a cup grip just above their knee and pinch your knee in.
  2. Anticipate the opponent's backstep pass attempt as they control your leg, drop their knee on your chest, and lean forward to place their hands on the floor.
  3. Before they execute the backstep, post your hand on the mat instead of keeping it in the air or holding a collar grip.
  4. As the opponent pushes your leg down and backsteps, place your leg across their back, maintaining the underhook on their leg.
  5. Circle your other leg around, spinning it all the way through to transition back to an open guard position.
  6. If you have a collar grip, switch to an arm grip to create a frame, which will help you push the opponent slightly as you position your leg across their back.
  7. Keep the underhook on the opponent's leg for control and spin your leg to recover full guard.
