About this video

Escaping the north-south position involves proper framing and hip movement. Avoid hugging the opponent, as this is a common mistake among beginners. Instead, keep both hands inside for an easier escape.

  1. Frame against the opponent by placing your hands inside as they move to north-south.
  2. Slide your hips to one side while simultaneously pushing the opponent in the opposite direction.
  3. Use your heels to slide your body down and create space.
  4. Bring your knees towards your chest, with one knee framing against their shoulder and the other leg stepping over the opponent.
  5. Push to create more space and recover your guard.
  6. Practice the movement by drilling side-to-side hip escapes, framing, stepping, and guard recovery.

This drill helps in becoming comfortable with the movements required to escape the north-south position and recover guard.
