About this video
Recovering from a half guard pass without using a frame involves a sequence of movements to prevent being caught in an arm triangle or kata gatame. The following steps outline the process:
- Keep your arm close to your body to avoid exposing it to submissions.
- Control the opponent's arm and begin to insert your elbow inside, above your leg.
- Bring your knee as close to your heel as possible, pinch your knees together, and point them upwards.
- Use your elbow to open the opponent's base and start moving your hips to change the direction of their weight.
- Push the opponent with your elbow while simultaneously moving your hips away to create space.
- First, insert your knee shield, then extend your hips and move your chest to create more space for your frame.
- Continue to push the opponent and move your hips until their head is no longer positioned over you.
- Once you have created enough space, insert your frame and start to elevate your knee shield.
- Secure your bottom hook on the opponent's leg and establish grips on their collar and arm.
- Move your chest away to create additional space, pummel for better control, and complete the recovery of your frame.
This technique emphasizes the importance of small, controlled movements and the correct sequence of knee shield before frame to safely recover from a compromised half guard position.
