About this video
Recovering the knee shield when an opponent is smashing it down involves a series of movements to regain guard. If the knee starts to get smashed down from the de la Riva position, use the following steps:
- Push the opponent away with the top leg and place it more on their belly to create space.
- Do not extend the bottom leg fully; instead, use the toes to elevate the hips and shoulder.
- Spin underneath the opponent by opening the top leg in a big circle to replace the guard.
- It's preferable to keep the knee shield in place for leverage, but if the opponent manages to smash it, use the frame and the leg on their belly to prevent a leg drag.
- Position the top leg in line with the opponent's hips and in the middle of their belly to avoid giving them the chance to pass to the other side.
- With the frame in place, use the bottom leg to elevate the hips and shoulder, then dive inside and square up with the opponent to complete the guard recovery.
