About this video

Warm-up partner drill for leg drag defense and guard retention:

  1. Bottom person places both feet on the hips of the top person, who frames with elbows on the floor.
  2. Top person performs a leg drag pass to the side, releasing the bottom person's legs.
  3. Bottom person frames against the top person's leg, keeping the arm heavy and stiff, toes on the floor, and hips moved to the side to maintain a sideways position.
  4. The outside leg of the bottom person steps on the top person's hips, and the bottom leg starts to come back to replace the guard.
  5. As the top person transitions to the other side, the bottom person repeats the framing, hip escape, and guard replacement process.
  6. Ensure to use toes, not heels, for the steps and maintain a stiff arm for effective framing.

Drill for turning the body down to defend the guard:

  1. Bottom person hip escapes out and creates space as the top person gets inside.
  2. Bottom leg goes towards the top person, and the bottom person starts to Gable grip the top person's leg, resembling a single leg takedown position.
  3. Bottom person comes up with knees and toes, then releases the grip, goes back, and repeats the process.
  4. Focus on a heavy inside grip and proper elbow positioning during the Gable grip.

Drill for guard replacement when behind in a fight:

  1. As the top person performs a Toreando pass, the bottom person exposes their back to the opposite side to replace the guard.
  2. Bottom person steps one leg over and uses toes to elevate the shoulder.
  3. Dive the head inside and bring the leg back to complete the guard replacement.
  4. When turning, ensure the elbow goes in, use the shoulder and toes to elevate the hips, and make a big circle with the leg.
