About this video
When an opponent in half guard shifts their hips to apply shoulder pressure and push the knee to pass, it's crucial to act quickly to recover the guard. The following steps outline the recovery process:
- Position your knee close to the opponent's knee as deeply as possible, with your knees pinched and pointing upwards.
- Place your frame on the opponent's hip to maintain distance.
- As the opponent shifts their hips, push them diagonally, not straight up, while inserting your head on the inside.
- Adjust your hips slightly to the side to create space for your knee to slide in between you and your opponent.
- Begin to extend your body using a chest escape, keeping your knee in place to block the opponent's pass.
- As you extend, the opponent loses leverage and will likely reposition, giving you the opportunity to establish grips and replace your guard.
- If your arm is outside, use your biceps to push the opponent as you bring your knee to their hips and extend your body.
- Once the opponent is off-balance and their pass is thwarted, you can create space for your knee shield, adjust your chest, and fully recover the guard.
