About this video
Defending against a traditional Toreando Pass, especially when the opponent is experienced and mixes it with Leg Drag Pass or transitions to North-South Position, requires a specific sequence of movements:
- When on your back and the opponent grips inside your knee and the other hand on your hip, pushing your knee down, initiate your defense with frames. Stiff arm and frame against their shoulder to halt their progress.
- On the side they are controlling, use your toes on the floor to prevent them from dragging your leg. Keep your leg flexed and knee close to your body.
- Avoid the common mistake of trying to hip escape out and stepping your leg on the floor, as this can lead to your opponent moving to your back.
- Instead, frame, bring your knees close, and keep your toes on the floor. Do not step the other leg on the floor; raise your knee to create a shield against the opponent's arm.
- Use your bottom leg to shift your hips away, creating space, and start to frame on your leg.
- Push against the opponent's shoulder with your top leg and bring your bottom leg to their biceps, sweeping it over as they drive forward.
- If it's difficult to step on the biceps, you can also step on the hips. Frame, use your bottom leg and toes on the floor, push on the shoulder, and then bring your leg straight to the hips to replace your guard.
