About this video
Sequence to improve position when on the bottom:
- Start flat on your back with elbows inside and hands in front of your face. Perform an Upa (bridge) to force an imaginary opponent to post hands on the floor.
- Bring heels close to your buttocks, bridge up, and as hips start to descend, turn sideways onto your shoulder, extending one leg flat on the floor and moving hips to the side. Keep elbows in to maintain a frame.
- For side control escape, bridge over your shoulder, keeping hips elevated, and pop hips to the side. Alternate sides, ensuring your ear almost touches the mat and hips stay off the ground.
- To simulate escaping to turtle position, bridge and start turning, placing hands on the floor. As you turn, tuck your elbow in to protect against hooks, go onto your shoulder with flexed legs and toes on the floor, then return to starting position with a wide leg circle.
- For belly-down escapes, hip escape to the side, use toes to elevate your shoulder, and bring the bottom leg down. Turn towards the leg you're aiming for, as if going for a single leg. Rise to your knees with both hands and the opposite side leg on the floor, then sit through.
- Perform a back roll over one shoulder and return with a front roll over the opposite shoulder, as if you need to replace the guard. Alternate between back and front rolls.
- Combine all movements into a full drill, transitioning smoothly between each technique.
