About this video
When unable to bring your knee to your chest to square up and recover guard, use a shoulder roll to reposition. Begin with a frame and if the grip cannot be broken and your partner starts to pass, execute a chest escape and pull your straight elbow to come up to your knee. If your leg gets stuck and you can't bring your knee to your chest:
- Maintain the framing and start looking to the opposite side.
- Place your forward shoulder on the floor.
- Release the grip on the collar as you initiate a front roll over the shoulder.
- Complete the roll, making a big circle with your body to square up with your opponent and recover guard.
This shoulder roll technique is essential when the knee starts to get pinned to the floor and you still have a grip on the collar. By looking to the other side and dropping the shoulder to the floor, you can let go of the grip and use the momentum of the front roll to re-establish guard position.
