Connecting collar and sleeve control to other open guards:
- Start with collar and sleeve control as the headquarters of your open guard, transitioning from closed guard.
- Transition to lasso guard by pummeling the leg over the top, playing either a shallow or traditional lasso with the foot hooking the armpit. This provides a feeling of control similar to closed guard.
- To transition to De La Riva guard, stagger the opponent's stance by making them step back. Control their ankle, let go of the sleeve, and create the angle needed to insert the De La Riva hook.
- Switch to spider guard by changing from a collar grip to a sleeve grip and placing the second foot on the opponent's bicep. Spider guard can also be combined with lasso or De La Riva guards.
- For butterfly guard, grab the opponent's ankle and place both feet inside. This is typically a transitional position leading to standard ashi or single leg X guard.
