About this video
Overhead sweep from De La Riva:
- Start in De La Riva guard, preferably with a sleeve grip. If the opponent insists on holding your collar, maintain an ankle grip initially.
- When ready to sweep, you can switch from the ankle grip to the sleeve grip to prevent the opponent from posting their hand.
- Push and pull the opponent to off-balance them. Once their weight is over you, pull both grips and extend your legs overhead.
- Execute a back roll all the way through to the mat, completing the sweep.
- If maintaining the ankle grip, follow the same push and pull motion, then extend your legs overhead and back roll to the mat.
- This sweep can also transition into a berimbolo. As you push and pull, load your guard, extend your legs overhead, and start inverting behind the opponent by catching their hip or belt.
