About this video

Pulling to Ashi from a collar sleeve position:

  1. Start in a good stance with one foot forward and one foot back. Make a collar grip and step forward with your left leg to close the distance.
  2. Lower your level as you step forward. Instead of reaching for the sleeve, reach for the outside of your opponent's near leg.
  3. Take your right foot off the mat, swing it behind, and start to off-balance your opponent by pulling them forward.
  4. Lift your hips and shoot yourself into the standard ashi position. The inside leg hooks the far glute, the outside leg steps on the near hip, and your knees close around their knee.
  5. Control their ankle with an overwrap using your arm. The other hand, which may already be holding the collar, can be used for various controls.
  6. From a collar and sleeve guard, let go of the sleeve, control the ankle, and pummel your legs to the inside position. Shoot one leg through as you pull your opponent over using the collar grip.
  7. Lift your hips and lock in the standard ashi position.
