About this video
Connecting butterfly guard to standard ashi using two-on-one grips and elevation:
- Start in a seated butterfly guard. Set up two-on-one grips on your opponent's wrist by pinching and rolling your fingers into the cuff.
- Strip the grip off and pummel their hand underneath your wrist to prevent re-gripping.
- Use either two-on-one wrist or two-on-one elbow grip. The elbow grip can make it easier to prevent your opponent from reaching back towards you.
- Move your right hook to your opponent's right leg, ensuring both hooks are on the same side as your grip.
- Scoot yourself close to your opponent by pulling your butt to your heels.
- Redirect your opponent over your shoulder to get them to post, loading your knees to your chest.
- Grip behind the bend of their knee, slide your leg through, and transition to standard ashi.
- In standard ashi, one foot steps on your opponent's hip, the other knee points at the same hip, the inside foot hooks the far glute, and you have an overwrap on their ankle.
- This position makes it difficult for your opponent to pressure or escape, providing good control for attacking sweeps, submissions, and back takes.
