About this video

Executing a basic sweep from standard ashi:

  1. Initiate a forward off balance by pushing and rotating your opponent. As they recover, use your knees to direct them in the opposite direction.
  2. To enhance the sweep, grab the second leg. In gi, grip the pants; in no-gi, grab the outside of the knee. Collecting both legs facilitates the sweep.
  3. Perform the forward off balance, then lift the hips, turn the knees out, and collect the second leg to knock your opponent over.
  4. To finish the sweep, make a cross grip on their pants to prevent them from standing up and to aid your own rise.
  5. Post your hand behind you, plant your foot, and execute a technical stand. Ensure you maintain your grip on their leg to prevent them from performing a technical stand up.
