About this video
Butterfly guard sumi gaeshi technique:
- When your opponent drops to their knees and covers your hips, avoid staying flat on your back. Forward shift to sit in a seated position by rounding your spine and controlling behind their elbows.
- Load your opponent onto you using your hooks and grips. Extend and sit up, then switch your control to a collar tie and an elbow tie.
- Push their head over their elbow while pulling their elbow towards their belly. Close your elbow over their hand or wrist to prevent them from posting.
- Drive their head towards the mat as you fall to your side. Use your knee lift to lift up onto your knee, pressing your toes into the mat.
- Maintain a strong hook with your hook leg until your shoulders turn towards the mat. Once your shoulders are facing the mat, extend your hook leg and drive yourself over towards the mat or into a knee cut.
- Ensure your forearm is between their collarbone and your hand behind their neck. Grab their tricep with your other hand, pulling their elbow in and pushing their head over their elbow.
- Take your lead hook out and place it behind your other foot. Drive their head towards the mat, fall to your shoulder, and perform a knee lift, lifting yourself up on your bottom knee and toes.
- Once your shoulders are turned towards the mat, extend your hook leg, drive your hips into their hips, post your hands, and proceed to take them out or pass their guard.
