About this video
Executing the Shoulder Crunch Sumi Gaeshi from Butterfly Guard:
- Start in a kneeling butterfly guard position.
- If your opponent attempts to flatten you out with a head and arm control, drive your hand on the same side as their underhook underneath their neck, creating a frame with your forearm against their throat.
- Connect your other hand wrist-to-wrist with the forearm frame, establishing a shoulder crunch grip. Squeeze their shoulder into your chest.
- Coil your core tightly towards the side where your elbow is in front of their chest, lifting your other elbow towards the ceiling.
- Keep your ear back towards their wrist to prevent them from posting.
- Extend your legs and sit up to your butt, maintaining the tight coil.
- Lift your left elbow to keep their elbow away from their hip, making it difficult for them to post.
- Step on their knee and stretch them out completely.
- Turn them over using your elbow in their sternum, transitioning to mount.
- Post your hands, collect their head, and prepare to attack from the mount.
