About this video
Basic straight ankle lock from standard Ashi:
- Initiate a backwards off-balance to bring your opponent to their hip. Use a forward or overhead off-balance first if needed.
- Maintain control with your inside leg hooking the far glute and your outside leg stepping on the near hip. Keep your knees closed to restrict their movement.
- Position your wrist under their Achilles, aiming for the sharp part of your wrist to align with the soft part of their Achilles.
- Initially, your grip may be higher towards their knee. Adjust by sliding your wrist back to the Achilles.
- Use a seatbelt grip: make a fist with the attacking arm and hook the second arm over the wrist joint.
- Slide back until the inside of your wrist finds the notch of their heel. Pull your wrist up into your sternum.
- Close your shoulder towards the mat and your elbow towards your hip to apply pressure on their ankle.
- Bridge your hips into the lock while keeping your elbow closed and hands high towards your sternum.
- Avoid keeping your hands by your belly; this leaves room for the ankle to move. Ensure you close the space entirely.
- Contract and squeeze your core, then hip in to secure the finish.
