About this video

Basic straight ankle lock from standard Ashi:

  1. Initiate a backwards off-balance to bring your opponent to their hip. Use a forward or overhead off-balance first if needed.
  2. Maintain control with your inside leg hooking the far glute and your outside leg stepping on the near hip. Keep your knees closed to restrict their movement.
  3. Position your wrist under their Achilles, aiming for the sharp part of your wrist to align with the soft part of their Achilles.
  4. Initially, your grip may be higher towards their knee. Adjust by sliding your wrist back to the Achilles.
  5. Use a seatbelt grip: make a fist with the attacking arm and hook the second arm over the wrist joint.
  6. Slide back until the inside of your wrist finds the notch of their heel. Pull your wrist up into your sternum.
  7. Close your shoulder towards the mat and your elbow towards your hip to apply pressure on their ankle.
  8. Bridge your hips into the lock while keeping your elbow closed and hands high towards your sternum.
  9. Avoid keeping your hands by your belly; this leaves room for the ankle to move. Ensure you close the space entirely.
  10. Contract and squeeze your core, then hip in to secure the finish.
