About this video
Connecting to the butterfly guard from a standing position:
- Begin by sitting guard rather than pulling guard. Ensure you have a grip, similar to pulling to collar and sleeve or De La Riva.
- Make a cross collar grip, post your hand, and fold your leg underneath your butt. Sit down and away from your opponent.
- To connect to the butterfly guard, pull yourself close to your opponent and scoot in. Bring both hooks behind their legs.
- From this position, you have transitions to standard ashi, X-guard, or other positions where you are underneath your opponent.
- Repeat the process: one foot forward, one foot back, reach for the collar, post the hand, and fold your leg as you sit down.
- Immediately pull yourself in, getting both feet inside your opponent's knees. Use your left hand to grab their ankle to prevent them from walking away.
- Switch to the ankle grip from the collar and sleeve to maintain control and pummel your feet behind the bend of their knees.
