About this video

Executing a tilt sweep from the lasso guard:

  1. Set up the lasso guard, either from spider guard or collar and sleeve grip. The hand grip will eventually be released, so both setups are viable.
  2. Foot placement can be either a shallow lasso or a regular lasso.
  3. Anticipate the opponent's attempt to leg drag the non-lasso leg. If they do, invert your knee and point it towards the mat to prevent the drag.
  4. Alternatively, place your foot against the opponent's hip to maintain control.
  5. If the opponent steps close or you off-balance them, scoop their leg at the knee and pull it to your chest while widening your left leg. This will make them fall where they have no base.
  6. From this position, several options are available:
    1. Free your leg and step to knee on belly.
    2. For advanced practitioners (brown belt and up in IBJJF), execute a bicep slicer by trapping their hand in your hip, hugging their head, placing both knees on the ground, and sprawling your hips into their wrist.
    3. Perform a long step by releasing the sleeve grip, cross-facing the opponent, moving your ear to their chest, and shifting your hips towards their head to release their arm. Transition to knee on belly or side control.

Key points to remember:

  1. Resist the leg drag by inverting the knee.
  2. Use a scoop grip on the opponent's leg to off-balance them.
  3. Extend the lasso to further off-balance the opponent.
  4. Transition smoothly to a dominant position such as knee on belly or side control.
