About this video
Collar and sleeve guard is recommended as a starting point for transitioning from closed guard to open guard due to its familiar grips and ease of transitioning into submissions like triangles and omoplatas.
- Begin in a good stance, open the collar, and establish cross collar and sleeve grips while lowering your hips.
- Instead of stepping on the opponent's hip, step your foot directly to their bicep. Ensure your training partner remains standing to avoid them falling on you.
- Place the other foot on their hip to prevent them from stepping over and knee sliding past you, or executing leg drags or Toreando passes.
- Create tension by pushing with your legs, pulling with your arms, and slightly lifting your hips off the mat. Avoid lifting too high to prevent stacking yourself.
- Maintain this tension to control the position and prevent your opponent from easily passing your guard.
