Executing the Shaolin Lapel Sweep transitioning to a Kneebar:
- Start in half guard shell and open the opponent's gi without getting cross faced, using one hand under their armpit for protection.
- Shoot the other arm in to grip the lapel, maintaining distance with the forearm to prevent being crushed down.
- Place your leg across the opponent's body and elevate your hips, applying backward pressure into them.
- Anticipate the opponent's body lock, which they will use to try to sprawl and escape.
- Use the lapel grip to prevent the opponent from sprawling effectively, maintaining control.
- When the opponent body locks, grab their wrist and perform a breakdancing-like move, looking over your shoulder and throwing your leg to off-balance them.
- As you turn the opponent over, lift your leg to transition into a kneebar before they fall onto it.
- To prevent the opponent from crossing their feet and defending the kneebar, split their legs during the transition.
- Control the rotation of the opponent's leg by placing your head on top of their toes, ensuring their knee faces you.
- Secure the kneebar by holding onto their knee and applying hip pressure.
Throughout the technique, maintain control of the lapel and manage the distance to effectively off-balance the opponent and secure the kneebar submission.
