About this video
Executing a Butterfly Sweep from the underhook position is effective for all skill levels. Maintain good posture with a strong underhook and head up, ensuring you're connected to your opponent without any looseness.
- Hook your foot onto your opponent's foot, turning your toes down and wrapping the instep of your foot underneath their ankle.
- Scoot back and straighten your leg to lock their knee in place, preventing them from moving it forward.
- Replace the control of their leg with your other foot, securing the inside of their knee, and remove the initial hooking foot.
- Keep your head close to your opponent and place one hand on the mat for support.
- Control your opponent's sleeve and stuff it into their body, avoiding falling to your elbow as it can hinder the sweep's momentum.
- Drop your shoulder to the mat and use your hooked foot to pull your knee to your chest, loading your opponent onto your legs.
- Use your free leg on the floor to push off and complete the sweep, tilting your opponent over.
- Once on top, slide your shin over their arm to secure a top crucifix position, providing control and setting up for submissions like Americanas or armbars.
This simple sweep is difficult to counter when executed correctly from the underhook position.
