About this video
Setting up a Marcelo-style hook sweep from the half guard shell position involves a specific sequence of movements and grips. Begin by transitioning from the shell position, bringing one arm across to the opposite side while turning the body slightly to have the back facing the opponent.
- Wrap the toes around the opponent's leg at an angle, scoot the hips back, and lock out the legs, ensuring the toes are turned down to secure the lock.
- Switch grips to prepare for the sweep by grabbing the opponent's elbow and establishing a collar tie.
- By turning the toes down and locking the leg, the opponent will find it difficult to move forward. However, they can undo the lock by lifting their knee.
- When the opponent attempts to step up with the knee, use the opposite leg to pull their leg, creating an opportunity to hook the knee with the foot.
- Execute the sweep by bringing the elbow in, placing the toes on the mat, and performing a hook sweep to come up on top.
- Often, the sweep will result in ending up in the quarter guard position. Use the hands on the mat to assist in rising to the top position.
- If the opponent traps the foot in quarter guard, open up the knee, throw the leg over, and slide out to come up on top without issue.
This technique allows for a smooth transition to a dominant position, even if the opponent attempts to counter by trapping the foot in quarter guard.
