Executing the Jedi Mind Trick involves creating a scenario where the opponent is encouraged to backstep, which is then countered by transitioning into a leg drag position. However, if the opponent moves quickly and reaches the other side, it's crucial to prevent them from taking the back.
The reverse half guard position can be used effectively for sweeping if applied correctly. When setting up the Jedi Mind Trick and the opponent pressures forward, the goal is to bring them over the top, get to their hip, and start breaking them down. If the opponent manages to backstep, the following steps should be taken:
- Slide the arm underneath the opponent's leg during their backstep, preventing their hip from occupying the space between your arm and leg.
- Quickly place the other arm inside the opponent's armpit, using your forearm as a barrier to keep them from getting close to your head.
- Turn your knees out with your legs to make it difficult for the opponent to drag your legs over.
- If the opponent tries to control your head, use the frame you've created to duck inside, maintaining the position.
- Curl the hand over the top of the opponent's top leg, keeping it close to avoid wrist locks and to apply pressure on their thigh.
- Whether in gi or no-gi, you can grab the material or just place your forearm inside and hook your hand in the armpit.
- Ensure your legs are active and tight, turning your knees outward to maintain control and prevent the opponent from advancing.
This defensive posture makes it challenging for the opponent to control you and sets up opportunities for counter-attacks.
