About this video

Executing a back take from reverse half guard:

  1. Recognize when you're losing control as your opponent backsteps and their hip approaches the mat.
  2. Hide your head and frame under their arm to prevent them from establishing strong head control.
  3. Use your other arm to clear their head control if necessary.
  4. Get inside their arm, keeping them on the other side of your elbows, and maintain your frame.
  5. Attempt to free their lapel and pass it to your hand, but if the gi is too tight or it's not feasible, simply grab as far as you can without losing your elbow position.
  6. Work with your feet as your opponent backsteps to make a twister hook with your top foot.
  7. Use your bottom foot to bend and manipulate their leg to secure the hook.
  8. Place your bottom leg's toes on the floor and bridge, shifting the weight to your shoulder and getting your knee through.
  9. Post your arm to help slip through to the back.
  10. If you cannot find the far lapel, use the tail of the skirt or grab as far as you can while keeping your elbows closed.
  11. With the hook set, bridge to transfer the weight onto your knee, keeping your thumb up.
  12. Slide your knee to the outside of your opponent's hip and swing it back across your body to secure back control.
