About this video

Managing distance when an opponent has obtained the underhook in half guard:

  1. Preferably, maintain the underhook, but if the opponent secures it, focus on keeping them down the body by adjusting the hip position.
  2. Create a hook with the leg and attempt a sweep. If the opponent tripods and grabs the bottom leg, it prevents the necessary mat contact for elevation.
  3. Stay calm and pass the controlled leg underneath the other leg to form an 'X' with the legs, keeping the feet connected tightly.
  4. Extend the legs to drag the opponent's shoulder line towards the waist, which will also lower their head.
  5. Free the arm by either stuffing the opponent's head down while elevating or by applying a quarter Nelson, lifting the opponent straight over the head.
  6. If possible, secure the opponent's arm to maintain control, or simply release if needed.
  7. When the opponent beats you to the underhook, use body angle and a tight armpit to keep them down.
  8. Upon setting the hook and starting the lift, if the opponent tripods and controls the bottom leg, execute the 'X' leg strategy and extend away.
  9. Free the arm, elevate, palm the back of the opponent's head, and complete the sweep to get on top.
  10. Alternatively, connect the hands for additional control during the elevation to assist in getting on top.
