About this video
The Jedi Mind Trick is a technique that allows you to take your opponent's back from the half guard position. Here's how it's done:
- Start with the underhook battle and get low. Anticipate your opponent's backstep, fix the hook, and move your body out of the way.
- Flip your grip around and reach across to the far lapel if you can do so safely, avoiding your opponent's kimura.
- Place your toes on the floor and transfer your weight to your shoulder. Drive forward, keeping your knee heavy on the floor and controlling your opponent.
- Advance towards your opponent, whose back should already be off the mat. Instead of hugging the head, grab anywhere you can on their upper body.
- Circle towards your opponent's back. Even if they manage to get their shoulder to the mat, you should be able to tip them and re-expose their back.
- Keep your head tight and be mindful of your opponent's other arm. Your hand that's on the collar should come to the tricep and start to drag their arm to their body as you circle.
- Align your toes with your opponent's shoulder line. Run your toes north as you throw the shoulder away from you.
- Your entire body, connected to the mat through your chest, acts as a kickstand to stop your opponent's return to the mat. If your hip is low, you won't have your weight in place to stop their shoulder.
- As you throw, let your body drift towards the head. Now your hands can connect.
- From the seatbelt position, make a series of adjustments to get your chest low. Slide your knee high, step the hip line, and start to drag your forearm over your thigh.
- As you sit to take the back, keep your head close to your opponent and maintain a tight seatbelt grip. Roll across your hip and set the hooks without losing any of your position in relation to your opponent's shoulders.
If your opponent is too tight, you can sit them up, step inside, and gun them back.
