About this video
Transitioning from a high clinch underhook half guard to taking the back:
- Start with an underhook and shoulder control, pushing the opponent's shoulder high and maintaining an angled body position to avoid being flat on the back.
- Reach far across the opponent's body, dragging their hands in while keeping the head tight and framing the opponent's body with the forearm to prevent it from being loose and open.
- Attempt to bridge and if the opponent starts to move away, preventing a transition to a seated or butterfly guard for a sweep, proceed to the next step.
- Insert a butterfly hook while continuing to sweep away, aiming to offload enough of the opponent's weight to find a base with the toes on the floor.
- Transition to the knee while simultaneously chucking the opponent's arm to move to their back.
- Secure a seatbelt grip upon reaching the back and decide whether to insert hooks for back control or to transition into a crucifix position.
This technique focuses on controlling the opponent's weight and movement, using the butterfly hook to create an opportunity to take the back when unable to sweep or regain guard.
