About this video
Continuing from a deep underhook position, when the opponent back steps, switch the hook, reposition the head, and establish a strong hook while flipping the grip over and hiding the bottom leg. As the pass is set up and the opponent pushes on the arm, attack the arm they are using to push. The opponent may try to prop themselves up on the opposite elbow to escape.
- Adjust the angle of attack based on the opponent's movement. Slide the shin in or step over the opponent, depending on their position.
- Maintain a constant grip on the far lapel and the near side arm, preferably above the elbow. This allows for proprioceptive awareness of the opponent's elbow line.
- By gripping above the elbow, you can backstop the elbow and mark its position in space, ensuring you always know where the armbar opportunity is.
- Transfer your weight and decide on the armbar entry angle. If the opponent is high, come in from a lower angle.
- Keep the same grips, transition to the wrist ensuring the opponent's thumb stays up, then lift and finish the armbar.
- When the opponent backsteps, reduce your hook and transfer to come up. If they push lower, step around the corner and throw your leg around their head to complete the armbar.
