About this video
Understanding half guard as the last layer of guard before an opponent passes or mounts, it's crucial to maintain control of one leg. If the opponent's hip passes both knees, half guard is established, and framing leverage with the legs is lost. To prevent the opponent from gaining an underhook and control, it's essential to win the underhook on the landing and be over with the other arm.
If the opponent secures the underhook, the arm must come out to prevent them from connecting their hands or dominating the arm. Keeping the armpit tight helps control the opponent's shoulder line. Depending on the opponent's position, either pin their knee to the mat or step on their hip. Create a hook with one leg, releasing the other to the floor to lift the opponent out of position.
Initiate a sequence of movements to off-balance the opponent, starting with a basic hook sweep. Lift with the hook, block the opponent's arm, and hop towards the posted leg to turn them over. If the opponent backs up, pummel the head underneath and use the inside arm to pull to the hip, hopping towards the posted leg to complete the sweep.
If the opponent posts their arm to prevent the sweep, continue the motion to free the bottom leg for transitions to the hip, setting up for an armbar, Omoplata, or back take.
