About this video

Entering half guard from reverse De La Riva involves several steps to control the opponent and transition effectively:

  1. Monitor the opponent's hands to prevent their passing game and establish a two-on-one grip if possible, using a pistol grip and hand on the tricep.
  2. Scoot in for a seated guard or drop back into half guard, maintaining control over the opponent's arms to prevent underhook and head control.
  3. Place a reverse De La Riva hook with the inside leg wrapping around the opponent's leg, toes by their hip, and secure the space above the knee and below the elbow with the inside arm.
  4. Use the outside leg to extend the opponent's leg away and chase with an underhook, or for a better option, place the outside leg beneath the lifting hook and use both legs to lift the opponent's hip.
  5. Reach underneath with the outside arm to grab your own shin and hold the opponent's heel with the inside arm, gaining control over their leg.
  6. Lift the opponent until their arms are no longer a threat, then reach for their other leg.
  7. Wipe the bottom leg, turn your hip over the outside of their leg, and pull them into half guard, setting your position with the top arm and switching hooks.
  8. If the opponent uses a whizzer to stop you, come up and take them down, walking them the other way.
  9. If unable to come up or walk them, connect over and bundle their legs.
  10. In case the opponent tries to back step, switch the hook and come out the other side with a Berimbolo.
  11. Always protect your feet from being grabbed by hiding them and keeping them behind your hands.

These steps ensure a smooth transition into half guard while maintaining control and preventing the opponent from passing or gaining advantageous positions.
