About this video

Half Guard is the last layer of guard where the opponent has bypassed the line of the feet and knees, eliminating the ability to use the legs as frames to keep the opponent's weight at bay. This position allows for a more direct connection to the opponent, offering opportunities to manipulate their weight for sweeps and attacks. However, it also means the opponent is closer to achieving their goals.

Developing comfort and fluency in bottom positions such as mount, side control, knee on belly, and especially bottom headlock and Kesa-gatame is crucial. Mastery in these areas will greatly benefit Half Guard play. The direct connection to the opponent in Half Guard can be advantageous if managed correctly, providing numerous counter-attacking options. Additionally, Half Guard serves as an effective strategy to neutralize and slow down opponents who are faster, stronger, or more athletic.
