Continuing from a deep underhook in half guard, delay the opponent's backstep by holding their leg until ready to proceed. When sensing the opponent's intention to backstep, release the leg and prepare to counter.

  1. As the opponent backsteps, create a hook with the bottom arm, which serves as the organizer, to feed the hook deeper, reposition the head, and adjust the legs.
  2. Move the head from the front to the back side of the opponent's body and drag their hip to the mat, hiding the bottom leg in the process.
  3. Switch the grip from palm facing inwards to palm facing away, or alternatively, reach across for the opponent's lapel, being cautious of a potential Kimura.
  4. Grab the opponent's pants with a palm-down grip and loop the armpit over their leg.
  5. Transfer weight to the shoulder, driving the knee to the opponent's armpit, and come up while closing the elbow and stepping up with knees together.
  6. Ensure the shin and knee are raised, almost parallel to the opponent's belt line, to prevent their hip from moving. Grab the pants, gi, or belt, lift, and close the elbow with knees pinching.
  7. Advance the hand on the pants to grip the far lapel, controlling the opponent's hip and preparing to pass their hands and elbows to reach the shoulders and head.
  8. Swim the arm to the inside and grab the top of the opponent's collar, keeping the head down and pivoting on the foot on the floor, with hips and knees off the mat.
  9. Use the arm to replace the knee, sliding the knee up the mat to be replaced by the second knee, and secure the underhook.
  10. If the hook feels too low, bounce it behind the opponent's knee, extending the leg with a flexed foot and driving the knee towards the opponent's chin and head.
  11. Flip the grip, hide the bottom leg, and if necessary, remain in position momentarily to find the opportunity to surface.
  12. Execute a hop similar to a hook sweep, elevating onto the shoulder, bringing the knee out, and locking the opponent's hip with the elbow down and stepping up.
  13. Maintain a tight elbow with the pants grip and reach across to grab the lapel. Keep the head low (except when speaking) and swim the arm inside to hug the shoulder.
  14. Execute a backstep, monitor the angle of the opponent's hip with the knee, replace the knee with the forearm, and then the forearm with the second knee to secure the position.
