About this video
Reversal to underhook recovery from a compromised half guard position:
- Begin in a disadvantaged position where the opponent has advanced their shoulder line, won the underhook, and connected their hands.
- Attempt to use any remaining momentum to initiate a sweep or switch the hook to get underneath the opponent.
- If the opponent is stable, create movement by bridging towards them, blocking their knee and arm, and using your bicep to press their head to the mat.
- When the opponent drives back, use their momentum to bridge again, hoping they post their arm to maintain balance.
- As they post, bring your hand out and move to your side more, sliding your hand inside to connect your hands in a palm-to-palm frame.
- With the inside arm, use a palm facing you to the inside of the opponent's shoulder, similar to a Gable grip, to create space.
- Continue to move the opponent away, recovering butterfly guard if they retreat or using their momentum to twist and push them away if they press forward.
- Create space to either transition to deep half guard or conventional half guard with a hip controlling underhook, or establish a hook.
- Choose to go to the deep underhook, using the sequence of pushing into the opponent, twisting, and bridging to gain the underhook and find a favorable position.
