About this video

Addressing the whizzer from half guard involves a series of steps to counter the opponent's overhook and secure a dominant position. When the opponent uses a whizzer to prevent surfacing from half guard, the following technique can be applied:

  1. Win the underhook and find the opponent's hip, switching the hook to control their leg.
  2. If the opponent applies a whizzer and forces you back down, clamp down on their whizzer arm.
  3. Dive the free arm inside and scoop your hip into the opponent, clamping your elbows together to bundle their hip to yours.
  4. Instead of relying on momentum, undercut the opponent's base by clamping down and, if available, grabbing their lapel.
  5. Use the bottom leg with toes on the floor to start scooping under the opponent's base.
  6. As you come on top, maintain the hook and pull the opponent's knee down, blocking above their knee line with your ankle.
  7. Connect your sweep to your pass by controlling the leg with the hook, limiting the opponent's options and forcing them into bad choices.
  8. When surfacing, use the hook to determine the angle of the opponent's hip and keep your hip heavy to the outside of their thigh.
  9. Replace your arm with your leg to control the opponent's leg, preventing them from retracting their knee.
  10. Finally, you can block the opponent's arm and finish the pass.

This sequence not only allows you to counter the whizzer but also sets up a strong position for pressure passing, giving the opponent limited options to escape or regain guard.
