About this video
Counteracting the knee cut pass from half guard involves a series of strategic movements to gain the upper hand. Begin by focusing on offense, aiming to get to a deep conventional half or secure a hip control underhook, with your shoulder aligned with your opponent's hip. Utilize bumps, hooks, and redirection to deflect your opponent's weight and maintain a foundational half guard position.
- Prevent your opponent from winning the underhook by preserving space. As they close in, drop your hand to your belly and block their arm as needed.
- Initiate the underhook with your hand first, rather than your elbow, to avoid getting stuck. Unfold your hand into the space to create the underhook.
- Shuck, lift, and scoot to advance your position, aiming to get your shoulder under your opponent's hip. If your opponent's knee points at your stomach, creating a frame against you, adjust your strategy.
- Switch your underhooking arm to mid-thigh and re-switch your hooks. Extend your leg and roll your hip to the outside of their knee.
- Switch the hook back, scoot tight, and ensure your body is flush to the outside of their thigh. Close your elbows to lock into position.
- When ready to sweep, release the underhooking arm, bringing your elbow to your hip while maintaining shoulder pressure on your opponent's hip.
- Transfer the weight from your hip to your shoulder, come out to your knee, and execute the sweep.
This sequence transitions from a defensive half guard to an offensive position, setting up a sweep with advanced details and proactive movements.
