About this video
Establishing the K-guard position is the starting point for the demonstrated sequence. If unable to transition to backside positions by chopping the leg over, the focus shifts to setting up the X-guard. The leg that cannot whip over easily is instead used to enter into X-guard by lifting the hips and positioning the leg underneath the opponent's thigh.
- Once in X-guard, maintain control with one hand above the opponent's knee and the other foot hooking. Use the foot on the inside of the opponent's thigh to push and create off-balances, rather than hooking across or staying idle.
- To initiate the sweep, force the opponent's hands to the floor by pushing at their knee. As they are off-balanced, prop up on the elbow and prepare to come up.
- With the opponent's hands on the floor, push with both legs and use the elbow prop to rise. Keep the foot that was pushing on the thigh in place to manage distance as they may pressure back.
- As you come up, the foot can transition to the floor, allowing you to either chase the far leg or pass the opponent's legs to take their back.
- If the opponent pressures back into you instead of dropping to a knee, control their second leg by pulling it towards you, keeping a grip above the knee.
- Lift the hips while maintaining the push with the foot on the thigh, and sweep the opponent over to the side of the leg you're controlling.
- After the sweep, come up to establish top position, maintaining control of the leg to prevent the opponent from countering.
This sequence provides a basic yet effective approach to sweeping from the X-guard when the initial plan to transition to backside positions is not available.
