About this video

Initiating a cross knee pull should be done with caution to avoid exposing oneself to underhooks, knee cuts, arm drags, front headlocks, or Kimura attempts. The key is to win the hand fight first and wait for the opponent to pull away, which serves as the cue to engage the cross knee pull.

  1. Avoid reaching for the opponent's lower body when they are in a strong position, as this can lead to vulnerability.
  2. Instead, frustrate the opponent to elicit a reaction where they pull away, creating an opening for the cross knee pull.
  3. When reaching for the pull, keep the elbow inside the knee to maintain a tight structure and prevent overextension.
  4. As the opponent pulls away, make a grip and use their movement to pull yourself in, maintaining knee and elbow connection to deny their control.
  5. Execute the cross knee pull shallowly and at an angle to establish a knee and elbow connection, setting up a strong K-guard position.
  6. Ensure that any extension of the hand away from the body keeps the elbow secured to the inside of the knee, denying underhooks and maintaining a tight structure.
  7. Use footwork and hand coordination to walk into the position, keeping the elbow tight and the structure compact.
  8. If the opponent attempts to pull their leg away, maintain stickiness to transition smoothly into the K-guard.
  9. Always aim to get the knee inside the opponent's knee and the elbow inside your own knee for a robust K-guard setup.
  10. If unable to establish upper body grips, use the cross knee pull to engage the lower body, ensuring the elbow remains attached throughout the movement.
